unwanted behaviours

Our pets can develop a range of unwanted behaviours, such as reactivity, destructiveness, separation related behaviours and inappropriate toileting to name a few. Such behaviour can be inconvenient or distressing for you but is often a sign that your pet’s welfare is being compromised.

behaviour problems

If your pet develops a behaviour problem, you should seek expert advice quickly. It is initially important to get your pet checked by a vet to rule out medical conditions or injury, as behaviour issues can be directly influenced by pain. Your vet can then refer you to a behavioural professional.

Finding a behaviour professional

It is important to find a behaviourist with appropriate knowledge, skills and experience to help you and your pet. Did you know that anyone can call themselves a behaviour expert? Without having correct or adequate training, many will use inappropriate or outdated methods which may adversely affect your pet’s welfare and can worsen the problem or create new ones.

The ABTC has registered professionals who are fully certified to help you and your pet by identifying the cause of your pet’s behaviour problem and creating structured treatment plans suitable for you and your pet.

The ABTC has both registered dog trainers, Clinical Animal Behaviourists and Veterinary Behaviourists. If your pet is insured, leading pet insurers in the UK now allow their policyholders to claim for consultations provided by accredited Clinical Animal Behaviourists.
