Registered veterinary nurse

purpose of this post

To carry out nursing duties to the animals at Mount Noddy.

hours

22.5 hours a week including occasional weekends. 

key duties and responsibilities

  • Undertake nursing duties as directed including theatre and ward(s) 
  •  Administer treatments (Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966 Schedule 3 procedures e.g. injections, medication, fluid therapy, dressing, first aid, euthanasia) as directed, and where permitted undertake minor surgical procedures.  
  • Triage patients for the attention of the veterinary surgeon/s 
  • Maintain up to date and accurate clinical records 
  • Dispense drugs in accordance with professional guidelines and hospital/ clinic rules  
  • Monitor and replenish veterinary supplies for consulting rooms and/ surgeries as directed by the Staff Nurse/Senior Clinician/Veterinary Officer.  
  • Cleaning and maintenance of all surgical areas & intensive care ward including laboratories, theatres and x ray rooms.  
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance of veterinary equipment and machinery and sterilisation of surgical instruments.  
  • Check machinery and other equipment as part of pre-ops and provide assistance to the vet as necessary/requested during operations. 
  • Ordering and maintaining stock levels of the in-house pharmacy and veterinary equipment.

  • To fully comply with RSPCA Sussex, Chichester & District Branch’s policies and procedures, ensuring these are carried out in relation to the post. 
  • To be an ambassador for the Branch and represent the Charity in a professional manner at all times. 
  • To attend monthly supervision with the AOM and annual appraisal with the ACM. 
  • Take care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their acts and omissions. 
  • To carry out such additional tasks as directed by the AOM or ACM and undertake any other duties commensurate with the purpose and remit of the post.

Person Specification:   

 Essential Desirable 
Qualifications RCVS qualification Competency in the use of clinical computer and word processing systems Up-to-date knowledge of the clinic services and products.  
Experience Experience as an active RVN Experience of delivering high quality work Experience working in a team Experience of keeping accurate and up to date records. Experience working with a charity 
Skills and knowledge  Familiarity with veterinary terms and drugs A good understanding of animal welfare Excellent communication skills. written and oral Excellent attention to detail Highly organised Good IT skills Ability to work well in a high pressured and emotive environment understanding of the work of the RSPCA understanding of the Data Protection Act  
Personal Attributes positive, enthusiastic and self-motivated team player good time keeping a genuine desire to help achieve the RSPCA charitable aims empathetic full valid UK driving licence
